Back Story:
After a long day of unsuccessfully looking for shrooms near New Melones Reservoir, I stopped focusing on photography and hiked to a point to enjoy the coming sunset. After sitting for a while and reveling in the view, I happened to look to my left and saw a beautiful cluster of Jack O’ Lanterns (Omphalotus olivascens) that were perfectly lit. After taking about 30 different compositions and angles, this beautiful arrangement was the one I liked the best. Jack O lanterns are common around oak, fruit from fall to winter, and are beautiful but toxic. Younger specimens’ gills have been known to bio luminesce (naturally glow) at night.
