Back Story:

The False Chantarelle (Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca) is a beautifully colored mushroom that fruits in fall and winter. I came across this solitary beauty while out hiking in the Stanislaus Nation Forest. After taking a bunch of shots, I continued on my way, not realizing what I had actually captured. Mushrooms use evaporative cooling to manipulate air currents for spore dispersal. Upon returning home and reviewing all my pictures, only one had the light perfect to actually see the air currents radiating off the cap. This is one of my favorite fungi pics as it shows the mushroom in action proactively taking control of its reproductive process
